Possible Engine Damage in V6 Honda and Acura Cars with 6 Speed Manual Transmissions
That used Honda or Acura with a V6 engine and an optional 6 Speed manual transmission could have internal engine damage.
If you have ever felt the acceleration of a late model Honda or Acura vehicle with a V6 engine and a 6 speed manual transmission, you had a smile on your face. While American Honda has always produced manual and automatic transmission equipped vehicles, in 1993 they offered the first Honda vehicle with a V6 engine and an optional 6 speed manual transmission in the Acura Legend coupe. A few years later, the Acura NSX was also offered with a optional 6 speed manual transmission.
In 2003, American Honda produced the final year of the Acura CL Type S with an optional manual 6 speed transmission and that same year they began producing the Honda Accord V6 coupe with a 6 Speed Manual Transmission option. These units, produced in lower numbers, can be difficult to find at times. However, if ever given a chance, you must drive one. Once you do, I think that you will agree that the 3rd gear is the quickest, when accelerating from a stop.
In 2004 American Honda extended the V6 engine with a 6 speed manual transmission option to the sedan line-up by offering the Acura TL with an optional manual 6 speed transmission and in 2006, they also offered the Accord EX-L sedan with an optional 6 Speed manual…These Accord sedans are very hard-to-find.
Now that I have your interest perked, let me warn you about the possibility of internal engine damage. As many of you may know, the vehicle computer prevents the engine from running over too many RPMs on acceleration. Even if you get in a Honda or Acura vehicle, while it is in park, and push the accelerator to the floor, the computer will not allow an over-rev, if it is working properly.
While the computer can control an engine over-rev on acceleration, it cannot prevent an engine over-rev if the driver aggressively downshifts with a manual transmission. An engine over-rev in this scenario will cause the exhaust valves to make contact with the pistons, which will bend the valves. To repair this damage, requires the removal of the cylinder heads for replacement of the bent exhaust valves.
