Engine oil and filter change intervals are quite possibly the most important and most neglected maintenance item on all gasoline powered vehicles. Back around 2006; American Honda started incorporating an Oil Life Indicator on many Honda and Acura models. The owner's manual specified that the oil life indicator could decline to "15% oil life remaining" before the engine oil and filter needed to be changed. From 100% oil life remaining to 15% oil life remaining was approx. 8,000 miles of driving in our area. Consequently, we started seeing many Honda and Acura vehicles coming in with severely worn camshafts (see example photo below) and engines that were consuming a considerable amount of oil between oil changes. Accurate Automotive proudly uses Idemitsu fully synthetic engine oil in our oil and filter changes and we recommend an oil change interval not to exceed 5000 miles. In addition, we also use a special 'one-time-use' brass crush washer. These crush washers prevent damage to the aluminum engine oil pan by providing a good seal at the oil pan plug without excessive tightening (drain plug torquing). Most shops and dealership service departments will not use the brass crush washers because it reduces their profit margin on an oil change by a few cents.
In over 30 years of working on Honda and Acura vehicles; we never saw worn cams like this until the oil life indicator was added to Honda and Acura vehicles and the owners instructed by the dealer to run the oil to 15% oil life remaining. From 100% to 15% oil life remaining is approx. 8000 miles. For those that don't know, the longer oil is in a crankcase, the more acidic the oil gets. We believe this type of wear starts as internal engine corrosion from oil being in the engine too long without being changed. Accurate Automotive highly recommends a maximum of 5000 miles between engine oil changes. Oil changes are really cheap when compared to major engine repair....
